Hargeisa, Somaliland – The Somaliland Medical Association (SLMA) successfully held its General Assembly Conference, bringing together over 700 members alongside key national health leaders in a landmark event for the medical community.
The two-day conference attracted high-level participation, including representatives from the Ministry of Health Development, the Chairman of the National Health Professions Commission (NHPC), the Director General of the Ministry of Health, and the Chairman of the Somaliland National Commission on AIDS. Their presence underscored the growing collaboration between SLMA and national health institutions.
The first day of the conference featured the official opening ceremony, followed by discussions on strengthening the Association’s governance framework. A major highlight of the day was the approval of the new SLMA Constitution by the General Assembly, marking a significant step toward institutional development and improved organizational structure.
On the second day, members of the General Assembly participated in a transparent and democratic electoral process. The conference successfully elected new leadership, including the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Executive Board Members, and Board of Trustees (Senate).
Dr. Yusuf Mohamed Yusuf was elected as the Chairperson of SLMA, with Dr. Muhiyadin Hussein Hassan elected as Deputy Chairperson.

A Milestone for SLMA
The conference marks a historic milestone for SLMA, with the successful adoption of a new constitution and the election of new leadership expected to strengthen the Association’s role in advancing medical professionalism, ethics, and healthcare quality in Somaliland.
SLMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with government institutions and partners to improve health services and support the professional development of medical practitioners across the country.
