Joint Meeting Between the Somaliland Medical Association (SLMA) and the Somaliland Quality Control Commission

Wednesday, 06 May 2026 – The leadership of the Somaliland Medical Association (SLMA) held an important meeting with the Somaliland Quality Control Commission at the Commission’s headquarters.

This introductory meeting focused on establishing a strong and effective partnership aimed at enhancing public health protection, particularly in the areas of medicine quality assurance and combating substandard, falsified, and counterfeit medicines that pose significant risks to the health and safety of the population.

The discussions provided an opportunity for both institutions to exchange views on the current challenges facing medicine quality regulation and monitoring, as well as the importance of strengthening coordination among key stakeholders responsible for safeguarding public health. Participants emphasized that ensuring the availability of safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines requires collective action and sustained collaboration between professional associations, regulatory authorities, and other relevant institutions.

Both parties acknowledged the critical role of cooperation in addressing issues related to pharmaceutical quality and agreed on the importance of continuing dialogue and developing a formal framework for collaboration. The proposed partnership will focus on several key areas, including:

• Strengthening information and data sharing between the two institutions.
• Conducting joint public awareness and health education campaigns on medicine safety and quality.
• Supporting the development and improvement of systems for monitoring, reporting, and ensuring the safety and quality of medicines available in the country.
• Promoting coordinated efforts to identify and prevent the circulation of substandard and counterfeit pharmaceutical products.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing cooperation in support of a stronger healthcare system and improved patient safety across Somaliland. Both organizations expressed their readiness to work closely together to protect the public from unsafe medicines and to contribute to the development of effective regulatory and quality assurance mechanisms.
